Former international football player Quincy Promes, currently playing for Spartak Moscow, is facing serious legal charges in the Netherlands. The 31-year-old is suspected of drug trafficking, especially importing 1,360 kilogrammes of cocaine into the country in two shipments in 2020. Promes is also facing aggravated assault charges for stabbing his own cousin during a brawl during a family party. In both situations, the footballer denies any involvement.
Dutch authorities recently disclosed that Quincy Promes, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla winger, is being prosecuted for his alleged participation in drug trafficking. The charges claim that Promes was involved in smuggling 1,360 kilograms of cocaine into the Netherlands or Belgium through two shipments in 2020. These allegations have dealt a significant blow to the 31-year-old footballer’s career.
Footballer Quincy Promes Faces Charges of Assault for Stabbing Incident
Promes’ lawyer has yet to reply to demands for comment, leaving many concerns about the case unanswered. Dutch newspaper Het Parool reported that his lawyer intends to address the charges during a pro forma hearing scheduled for Monday, although Promes is not expected to be present.
Along with the drug trafficking charges, Promes is also facing assault charges. He was detained in July 2020 after a stabbing incident in the Dutch town of Abcoude. It was eventually revealed that the victim was Promes’ cousin, and the altercation occurred following a family celebration. The footballer categorically denies any role in the attack.
A preliminary hearing in the assault charge is also scheduled for Monday, adding to Promes’ legal difficulties. The Dutch public prosecutor’s office has requested a two-year prison sentence for the player, who initially faced charges of attempted murder. However, the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the more serious allegations.
Once a promise, now he’s career might be over
Promes used to be a great promise of Dutch football. The winger, now 31 years old, began his sports career in his country’s league, where he quickly started to stand out. His outstanding performances at FC Twente led him to the Russian league, where Spartak Moscow secured his services. In this league, he soon became the best player in the league: twice the best player of Spartak, top scorer, and Footballer of the Year in Russia… all while playing on the wing.
After a few exceptional years in Russia, Western Europe took notice of his existence. Sevilla, in particular, is recognised for signing lesser-known players and getting outstanding performances out of them. He failed to live up to expectations with the Spanish club, scoring only three goals before being sold the following year.
Promes returned to the Dutch league after his stint at Sevilla, this time to the club he himself called “the love of his life.” Ajax retained his services for a year and a half, during which time he performed at the expected level. His time at the club, however, was short-lived, as Spartak Moscow invited him back in 2021, and he chose to return to the Russian division, where he had previously built a reputation for himself.
Due to his football commitments, Quincy Promes will be unable to attend the proceedings. The lawyer representing the forward has stated that additional explanations will be presented during the next judicial hearings.
