Manchester City advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season after beating Bayern Munich. They will now face Real Madrid, the holders and 14-time winners of the competition. The two teams met at the same stage last season, with City progressing to the final four on that occasion as well.
Bayern’s missed chances
Despite a passionate home crowd in Munich, Bayern failed to convert numerous early chances. Ederson made clutch saves against Sane and Coman. Bayern was left to rue their wasted chances after failing to build a comeback.
In the 57th minute, Haaland scored the game’s sole goal, capping off a quick counter-attack by City. City advanced to the next round thanks to the Norwegian’s 12th Champions League goal of the season and 48th goal overall. Earlier, Haaland had missed a penalty after Upamecano was found to have handled the ball.
Bayern’s difficulties escalated when coach Thomas Tuchel received a second yellow card and was removed from the field in the final minutes of the game. After a review for Akanji’s handball, Kimmich scored a late consolation goal for the home team from the penalty spot.
Upamecano’s nightmare
Upamecano had a nightmare night, being responsible for Haaland’s goal as well as giving up the penalty that Haaland missed. After 18 minutes, he was sent off, but he was given a mercy when the linesman raised his flag for offside.
