In Sky Bet League One action, Cheltenham Town and Sheffield Wednesday battled to an intense 2-2 draw. The Robins got off to a strong start with Aidan Keena and Alfie May both finding the back of the net in the second half. However, the Owls were not to be outdone, as Aden Flint and Lee Gregory answered back with crucial goals to secure a point in the game.
Cheltenham Town’s unbeaten streak in Sky Bet League One was extended to five games following their hard-fought draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Whaddon Road. The Robins dominated the first half with several chances but were unable to capitalise on them, while the Owls came back with a vengeance in the second half, showcasing their resilience to salvage a draw.
Despite Cheltenham’s persistent attacks, they were unable to break through Wednesday’s defence, with goalkeeper David Stockdale making a series of impressive saves to keep the Robins at bay. Stockdale thwarted Keena and May’s attempts, and Liam Sercombe’s near-miss was also stopped by the impressive shot-stopper.
30 minutes of non-stop goals
Sheffield Wednesday came out of the halftime break with great momentum, and Luke Southwood, Cheltenham’s goalkeeper, had to make a brilliant save to prevent Michael Smith from scoring. However, it was Cheltenham who struck first in the 62nd minute when Aidan Keena scored his second goal in two games, capitalising on a miscue from Dominic Iorfa after Will Ferry’s delivery.
The home team continued to press forward, and just seven minutes later, Alfie May was in the right place at the right time to score his fifth goal in five games after David Stockdale parried a shot. Cheltenham seemed to be cruising towards a victory, but Aden Flint’s powerful header in the 75th minute gave Sheffield Wednesday a glimmer of hope.
Late goal by Lee Gregory rescues a point for Sheffield
As the clock was ticking down, Sheffield Wednesday threw caution to the wind, pressing forward in search of the crucial equaliser, and their persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute. Lee Gregory was in the right place at the right time to tap in a low cross from Michael Smith and salvage a valuable point for the Owls. With this result, Sheffield Wednesday has narrowed the gap to just two points behind the league leaders, Plymouth.
Although Cheltenham will be disappointed that they couldn’t secure the win, they can still take pride in their performance against a formidable Sheffield Wednesday side. The Robins are now unbeaten in their last five games and will be looking to continue their good form in their upcoming fixtures.
