It’s finally time for the first NFL Power Rankings of the 2019 season. We are finally approaching week 1 of the 2019 NFL season. With preseason football getting worse every year, this couldn’t come fast enough. It is finally time to see all the free-agent signings, trades, and draft picks in real action that matters.
These power ranking are based on a variety of factors you will see listed below. There is no exact mathematically formula but there is a process based on the importance of criteria, so I am not just picking teams every week based on emotion.
There is obviously subjective input to power rankings so please try not to get too upset and let’s have some fun this season.
The following is the NFL Power Rankings criteria by importance
- Wins & Losses
- Strength of Schedule
- How good the team currently is regardless of record
- Health of team (Yes, they may have a good record but they might have lost their starting quarterback for example.
- Chance at Superbowl (Top 16 must be in playoff race)
- Franchise history of success
Previous NFL Power Rankings:
1. New England Patriots
I will keep the New England Patriots in this spot until they show me otherwise. I would also advise against counting them out because of aging.
2. Kansas City Chiefs
If Patrick Mahomes can play at an MVP level again, the Chiefs will contend for a Superbowl. If he doesn’t they will be fighting for a playoff spot.
3. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are still loaded and have a young smart coach. This team will be in the top 5 all year. I will be very surprised at anything else.
4. New Orleans Saints
This team is still angry about the missed call in the NFC Conference Championship game. They believe they should have been playing in, and won Super Bowl 53. Expect them to play with a chip on their shoulder.
5. Chicago Bears
The Bears have the best defense in the NFL to start the season. The only question marks are in the kicking game and figuring out who Mitch Trubisky really is.
6. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are dealing with some things. The Melvin Gordon holdout issue and the injury to their stud safety, Derwin James. Despite that, this team looks to contend. Phillip Rivers has his playoffs issues but we will talk that when the time comes.
7. Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles finally have their quarterback healthy. If he plays like he did before he was injured this could be a scary team.
8. Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys are trying to get Ezekiel Elliot back, but they don’t really need him to be competitive. They have a solid team and can make a playoff push without him. Jerry Jones has even suggested just getting Zeke back by the playoffs.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers got rid of two very talented players. They believe they are much leaner now and have a team that will play together and for each other. I will go with team over talent any day.
10. Minnesota Vikings
Full disclaimer: I am a Minnesota Vikings fan and blogger. With that being said, I think the Vikings are in a much better position to win this year compared to last year for a variety of reasons. I won’t go into detail here about them but follow me on Twitter and you will see plenty of them.
11. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks took Jadeveon Clowney from the Texans hoping to bring their defense back to what it once was. Russell Wilson is ready to roll with the 12th man.
12. Green Bay Packers
A lot of people are high on the Packers this season because they have a new head coach. I have even seen them as high as number 1 on some power rankings. Let’s call it what it is. The Packers are still the 3rd best team in the NFC North. I won’t entertain any other ideas right now.
13. Cleveland Browns
I feel that I am the only person not on the Browns bandwagon. 13th is very generous for Cleveland in my opinion. I am not bought into this hype and will be very slow to do so. I do believe they will have a shot at the wild card.
14. Houston Texans
The last week has been puzzling for many Texans fans. They made a series of trades to end the preseason. I think they did improve their offensive line but we will see how everything pans out. They may have jeopardized their future in the process.
15. Baltimore Ravens
Overall, the Ravens have a good squad. The question is whether Lamar Jackson is dynamic enough of a quarterback to sustain success in today’s pass heavy NFL.
16. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons seem to be the team that can rise or fall any given year. Because of that, I am starting them right in the middle of the NFL.
17. Carolina Panthers
This is a Wild Card bubble team in my opinion. Still enough talent to be a top team in the NFL.
18. Indianapolis Colts
I still expect the Colts to contend for a wild-card playoff spot after losing Andrew Luck to retirement last week. Jacoby Brissett can take this team there.
19. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars fell hard last season, so the only places to go is up. Can Nick Foles take them there?
20. Tennessee Titans
There are a lot of question marks around Marcus Mariota. This could be a make or break it year for him. That pressure might just get the Titans in the playoffs mix again.
21. Detroit Lions
Even after watching the Vikings play the Lions twice last season, I am still trying to figure this team out. I expected more out of Matt Patricia during his first year. Some of his roster moves have been questionable as well. What exactly is he building?
22. San Francisco 49ers
The Niners have their quarterback back and could be one of the surprise teams of the season. Only thing is they play in a tough division.
23. Denver Broncos
The Broncos defense isn’t what it once was, but it is still good. Flacco might manage the game well enough to make the Broncos a bubble team. If not they will be in the 20’s all season.
24. New York Jets
Jets are not as bad as you think but still have a ways to go. They have some promising pieces on both sides of the ball.
25. Buffalo Bills
Just like the Jets, the Bills are in a similar building situation. It really is a race to see who can start producing wins first.
26. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders signed some big players like Antonio Brown. That still isn’t enough to move them up for me. They were bad last season and I don’t think one talented drama-filled player is going to change their culture.
27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jameis Winston has a lot to prove this year. He will win the Buccaneers some games and then they will lose a lot of games as well.
28. Cincinnati Bengals
New coach alert. Many forget that the Bengals hired a new coach this season. Will this finally wake up Andy Dalton or will they be at the bottom of the NFL all season?
29. Washington Redskins
The Redskins are starting Case Keenum at quarterback because of the Alex Smith and Colt McCoy injury. While Keenum took the Vikings to the NFC Championship in 2017, don’t expect a repeat.
30. Arizona Cardinals
This is a team with a rookie quarterback that I have zero expectations for. I completely think they are going to let this be a brutal learning experience for Kyler Murray and take the punches.
31. New York Giants
Daniel Jones really impressed me during the preseason. At what point is this going to be his team? They have to be careful because they can either tank or rally.
32. Miami Dolphins
This is just a bad team all around. With that being said I would not be surprised if Fitzmagic gets them off to a hot start.
