LaMelo Ball continues to garner attention for his play on the basketball court, and he’s now receiving high praise from scouts and NBA executives. The Ball family’s been in the news ever since the oldest son, Lonzo, emerged as a top recruit from Chino Hills. Now, the youngest takes his turn in the spotlight, even if dad tries to steal it. If Melo is a lottery pick, he’ll have options in terms of signing a sneaker deal. Today, we take a look at his options, and which one he should take.
Sneaker options for Lamelo Ball
Big Baller Brand
If we ask anything of Lamelo, it’s to not stick with his dad’s brand. Lonzo gave it a shot and it didn’t work.
It seems like Nike’s the favorite for every top pick that’s looking to sign a sneaker deal. He’d join an elite group of players with team Nike, but it’s also a group that’s crowded. If he’s also looking for a signature sneaker, Nike’s the least likely to make that happen given the number of signature athlete’s already on their roster. They just added Giannis Antetokounmpo, so it would be a surprise if they added another signature athlete this soon.
It would be perfect for Melo to sign with Jordan Brand and wear Melo shoes. Carmelo Anthony that is. How cool would that be? The brand just signed Zion Williamson this past season, and the list is growing as the brand continues to evolve. If wearing Michael Jordan’s shoes appeals to Melo, the Melo wearing Melo campaign can begin.
It feels like Adidas is due for another signature athlete. It’s been a few years since Adidas introduced a new signature sneaker to its lineup, and Melo gives them an intriguing option. He’s typically played in low top shoes, so it gives the brand another low top option to sell to consumers.
A dark horse for Melo. Puma’s been making noise with their return to basketball, and they’ll love having someone like Melo on their team. It’s the hottest new brand, and they need to keep the train rolling. They don’t have a signature athlete yet, but Melo could be the first.
What is Under Armour going to do? Steph Curry’s the only signature athlete, though his lines does extremely well. If UA’s plan is to continue relying on Steph as their only signature, it won’t end well in the long run. Signing Melos gives them another big name, and potential for a new signature shoe line that fans can follow.
Other options: Peak, Anta, AND1, New Balance, Li-Ning
Which brand should LaMelo Ball join?
If LaMelo ball wants to go on his own path, he could go with a brand overseas like Li-Ning. He’d be the featured athlete right off the bat, and a signature shoe wouldn’t be far behind. He’s played in Nike and Adidas outside of his own shoe, so he’s familiar with those brands. It seems like that’s where he’ll go given his history. Under Armour seems to be out of the picture with nearly everyone at this point, so we’ll count them out. Jordan Brand is the wild card, and could be a great fit for him. Melo said he prefers Kobe Bryant’s sneaker to play in, and we think that’s who he’ll choose.
