The Minnesota Timberwolves franchise player Karl-Anthony Towns is going to be in Minnesota for an additional 5 years. Today Towns signed a 5 year extension with the Timberwolves worth $190 million.
This is a big signing for the Wolves. Towns is 22 years old and was an NBA All Star last season. The Wolves just ensured they will have an All Star player leading their roster for the forceable future. Towns is the center of this franchise and this gives them time to build around him as he enters his prime. This all happened right in the middle of the Jimmy Butler drama I have been covering. Butler demanded a trade because he does not want to play with Towns and Wiggins. That is perfectly okay with me because Butler is good, but has been nothing but drama. It is time for the Wolves to put the focus back on KAT, which is what they did today. It will be interesting to see what pieces that Wolves get for Towns when they deal Jimmy Butler away. I expect this trade to happen very soon now that Towns signed his extension. I will leave you with an amazing statement from Towns as reported by ESPN.com. This one will make you feel good.
“On June 25, 2015, I was drafted to and committed to the Minnesota Timberwolves. On September 22, 2018, I made a recommitment to the Wolves and have the same feelings of excitement that I felt back in 2015.
“I promise to the fans, my teammates and the organization to keep the vision of the man who drafted me, Flip Saunders, alive and treat his dream of winning with respect and dignity. To the fans from Day One and the Timberwolves fans, this is for you. Thank you for believing in me.”
Flip Saunders had a plan for the Wolves. It is good to see someone still carrying that vision out.
