Mario Cristobal can recruit, but the question became if he could coach. That question’s been answered, and he can take another step this year. The Oregon Ducks have their sights set on the College Football Playoff. Well, actually they’re on Auburn, but that’s the long-term goal. The last time these two teams face, Auburn beat the Ducks to win the 2011 national championship. Now, they start the year in a game that has big implications for both squads.

Why Oregon wins

Justin Herbert will be a first round draft pick next year, maybe even the top quarterback selected. Though he’s in need of receivers after losing a few in the preseason, Herbert’s the most talented player on the field. That will be a huge asset for the Ducks. Oregon’s offensive front features five potential All-Conference players, and they’ll battle with Auburn’s defensive line. Whoever wins that matchup determines the game, and the Ducks have a good chance of winning with the guys on their line.

Why Auburn wins

Gus Malzahn gets his teams to compete in the SEC, and their conference is much better than Oregon’s Pac-12. Bo Nix starts his first ever college football game, but Malzahn will put him in position to be successful. Auburn wins the game if the offense thrives against Oregon’s defense. The Tigers defense will make life tough for Herbert and the Oregon Ducks offense, but their own offense must produce.

Prediction

Oregon’s somehow an underdog in this game, and that will give the Ducks more fuel to compete. Malzahn’s seat is hot after a disappointing year, so the pressure’s on him to win. That will be tough to do with a freshman quarterback, and the Ducks are too talented to ease into the game. OREGON 42 AUBURN 20
