For Group of 5 teams, Week 1 was wild. We saw upsets galore, and a few were more surprising than the others. While the G5 continues to improve its reputation, wins like this are vital. Georgia State and Wyoming produced stunners, while other teams handled business like usual. The Boise State Broncos headed to Florida, and upset Florida State. If you’ve followed the Boise State Broncos program, you probably expected the win. While all of these teams don’t have a realistic shot of making the playoff, we still want to spotlight them. This weekly series takes a look at the four best G5 teams as if they had their own playoff.

Boise State Broncos

It was an iconic Boise State Broncos win on Saturday. Florida State jumped out to a 31-19 lead at halftime, but Boise State took over from there. The Broncos defense held the Seminoles scoreless in the second half, and freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier led the offense to the win. It was clear the Broncos were the more prepared team when the clock hit zero.

UCF Knights

If anyone thought the Knights would take a step back offensively, they were wrong. Brandon Wimbush took over and kept the explosive UCF offense going. Beating Florida A&M by 62 doesn’t carry the same weight as the Boise State Broncos upset over Florida State, but the Knights are still in position to be the best team. They’ll get their chances to beat Power 5 teams with Stanford and Pitt on the schedule, but for now they focus on Florida Atlantic.

Georgia State Panthers

Are the Panthers a Top 4 team in the G5? Who knows. For now, they have an upset win over Tennessee. Georgia State went on the road and stunned the Volunteers in the first week of the season. Shawn Elliott showed that they can compete in the Sun Belt, but now we know they can compete with the SEC as well.

Wyoming Cowboys

Another underdog, another SEC upset. Wyoming somehow got Missouri to come to Laramie, but the Tigers might not come back. Wyoming spoiled Kelly Bryant’s Missouri debut, and put the Mountain West on notice. Teams like Boise State and Utah State will be the favorites, but the Cowboys and Craig Bohl are ready to make a run.

Others: Memphis, Cincinnati, Tulane, Utah State, Nevada, North Texas, Hawaii, Houston
