When the Alabama Crimson Tide walked off the field after the national championship game, the immediate focus turned to this season. The beatdown they sustained against Clemson was arguably the worst in Nick Saban’s tenure. The offense struggled, and the defense couldn’t stop freshman Trevor Lawrence. It was the most uncharacteristic performance in a long time for his team. If you thought Alabama was intimidating already, you won’t like the 2019 version. They return as much talent as anyone, and they now possess the proverbial chip on their shoulder. Duke drew the short straw this week, but they won’t be the only team to do that this year.

Why Alabama wins
Anyone not named Clemson who faced the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 1 would be in trouble. After losing to the Tigers in the national championship game by 28, the Tide are arguably more dangerous than ever. They also return a ton of talent everywhere. Who knew Alabama could be even scarier? They’re arguably the most talented team in the country, and now they have a chip on their shoulder. I wouldn’t be surprised if they score 100. Tua Tagovailoa returns to make a Heisman run, but must stay healthy. His receivers all have NFL potential, and the defense is run by Saban. Not much more needs to be said.
Why Duke wins
This isn’t basketball, so they don’t. Maybe if Alabama doesn’t show up to the game. The bus gets lost. Every Alabama Crimson Tide player gets sick. Nick Saban retires. Pick a ridiculous hypothetical scenario, and that’s how Duke wins. David Cutcliffe is one of the best coaches in the country, but he can’t pull off this stunner.
The line says -35, but that’s generous to Duke. Alabama’s ready to destroy the Blue Devils, and there’s not much that Duke can do about it. If you took Duke to cover, I would stop betting forever. ALABAMA 56 DUKE 10
